Manufacturing guidelines for different types of fused layer modelled connectors

Generative manufacturing is becoming more and more popular in the industry thanks to continuous further development in materials sciences, continuous improvement of the process stability and increase in know-how in this area. The aim of this project was to investigate different designs for connectors for the client HAGE Sondermaschinenbau by using fused layer modelling (FLM).The outcome of the project was a set of manufacturing guidelines for fused layer modelled joints, clips, clamps and karabiners. The structure of the guidelines is chronological: design, generative manufacturing, testing and evaluation. Research included the investigation of the mechanical resistance of acrylic styrene acrylonitrile (ASA), a material that is used in industrial applications. The results serve as the basis and as a reference for other generatively manufactured parts. Depending on the connector, its mechanical resistance, dimensional tolerance, structure and functionality were included in the evaluation criteria. The prepared guidelines support designers in developing products in future and should provide impetus for creating new ways of developing generatively manufactured parts.
