In case of illness

In the event of illness, EU and EEA citizens need only present their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC card) to be seen by a doctor free of charge.

It is imperative for non-EU and non-EEA students to take out personal insurance cover with the Styrian Regional Health Insurance Fund (Steiermärkische Gebietskrankenkasse – GKK). Once these students have been issued with an EHIC card they do not need to pay for consultations with any doctors affiliated to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund.

In emergencies it is possible to be treated at doctors’ surgeries or in hospitals without an EHIC card upon payment of a deposit. In such cases, students will be reimbursed for the deposit paid upon presentation of their EHIC card.

The website of the Styrian Association of Medical Practitioners (Steirischen Ärztekammer) enables users to search for an appropriate doctor in the surroundings. Students must always make sure that the doctor in question is affiliated to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, since they will have to pay any fees themselves for consultations with other doctors of their choice or with private doctors.

If a stay in hospital as an inpatient is required, the majority of the costs involved will be covered by the insurance fund. A lesser fee must nevertheless be paid by the patient. The prescription fee is currently 5.70 € per medicine.

A list of all pharmacies in Graz can be found here. Pharmacies usually open during the week from 08:00 to 18:00 and from 08:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays. A duty pharmacy service is available for emergencies outside of those opening hours. A list showing which pharmacy is providing the duty pharmacy service at any given time is available from the Graz online portal.

There are three hospitals in Graz, all of which are easy to reach using public transport: Landeskrankenhaus Graz (Graz State Hospital – LKH), Landenkrankhaus Graz Süd West(South West Graz State Hospital – LKH Graz West) and Unfallkrankenhaus Graz (GrazAccident Hospital – UKH).
